Currently Professor of Chemistry at Albion College, and Coordinator of the Sustainability Studies major, Prof. French has been active in the use of “Green” Oxidation reactions that impart chirality on achiral compounds, specifically Chiral hypervalent iodine reagents. During his 20 year academic career, Prof. French has established a number of international collaborations with chemistry faculty at the University of Basel, Switzerland, Cardiff University, Wales, and the university of Mainz, Germany. In addition, Prof. French has been at the forefront of the use of technology in the classroom, including tablet PCs and other wifi devices. Outside of his “ faculty job”, Prof. French is an elected City Councilman for the city of Albion, MI and has established Sustainability and Energy subcommittees to the Council to generate ideas to help the city be more conservation-minded in its use of natural resources. Policies such as gasoline usage and electricity usage have come out of this committee.
