I received a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Massachusetts, in 1972 and a PhD in Geology from the University of California, Los Angeles, 1978. I have been on the Faculty at Albion College since 1981. I am a member of the Geology Department and Director of the College’s Center for Sustainability and the Environment. I teach the following three sets of courses: introductory science courses for all liberal arts students, taught to stress the relationships between science and society; upper level courses in environmental geochemistry and hydrology for geology and environmental science majors; and courses in sustainability and the environment, including a field seminar which takes students throughout the US to meet with professionals dealing issues as varied as river engineering in Louisiana, nuclear waste disposal at Los Alamos, sustainable businesses in Portland, Oregon and habitat restoration in the Chesapeake Bay. My formal graduate training is in geochemistry and the origin of metallic ore deposits. For many years my research has dealt with the Precambrian geology of the Black Hills and the evolution of the North American continent. Recently I have become involved in supervising a series of student research projects dealing with the fate of nutrient compounds from agricultural runoff in riparian zones and with service projects including the College Student farm and a local community permaculture planting.
